Health Minister to address delegates at Breastfeeding Consultative summit

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi is expected to address local and international experts on child health at the national Breastfeeding Consultative meeting scheduled for 22 to 23 August, St George Conference Centre, Pretoria. 

The summit will be attended by researchers, academics, government policy makers representatives from United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), WHO and the Medical Research Council among others. The summit is geared at repositioning, protecting and promiting breastfeeding as a key child survival strategy in South Africa. The expected outcomes of the two-day summit are:

  • Recognition of breastfeeding as a key child survival strategy in South Africa
  • Consensus on legislative, policy and programme changes required to better support, promote and protect breastfeeding
  • Recommend concrete actions to better promote, protect and support breastfeeding for government, the health system, communities and workplaces, and
  • A call to action to promote, protect and support breastfeeding as a child survival strategy in South Africa.

Members of the media are invited to attend the opening of the summit when the health Minister will be delivering his opening address.

Note to editors: A press conference to announce the outcomes of the summit is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, details regarding time will be communicated on Tuesday morning.
