Health Deputy Minister Gwendoline Ramokgopa visits relatives of a family that was burnt whilst locked inside a house

Responding to a fatal tragedy involving man who allegedly burnt his wife and their two children into flames and later committed suicide during the past weekend in Atteridgeville in the City of Tshwane, the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwendoline Ramokgopa, has mobilised civil society to provide solidarity and support to the relatives.

It is suspected that the man had a heated argument with his wife. He allegedly later locked his wife and their two children inside the house and burnt the house. His wife and children burnt to death. It appears that he later committed suicide.

Dr Ramokgopa is scheduled to lead a delegation visiting relatives of the deceased on the morning of Tuesday, 6 September, to provide support to their relatives. Ramokgopa will also receive details about burial arrangements and the family’s required support.

Speaking about this depressing incident, Dr Ramokgopa said: “This is a very unfortunate and unacceptable incident in our society, especially as we just emerged from the Women’s Month and at a time when government is doing its best to curb domestic violence through family education and enforcement of laws meant to curb domestic violence”.
