Deputy Minister to visit the girl-child with mental disability who was violated by a warrant officer in Ermelo

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Hon. Hendrietta Bogopane–Zulu, will be meeting with political leadership in Mpumalanga tomorrow, Saturday 5 July 2014, to engage them on the scourge of gender-based violence against women with disabilities, and children with disabilities in particular. This follows media reports of a 17-year-old girl-child with mental disability, who was allegedly raped and impregnated by a 52-year-old Warrant Officer in Ermelo.

The purpose of the meeting will be to raise awareness of the rights of children with disabilities, and children and women with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities in particular, and what reasonable accommodation support is required to ensure that they have equal access to justice, and how incidences such as this one can be prevented.

The Deputy Minister will also visit the family during her visit.

Date: 5 July 2014
Meeting Time: 12h00
