Handing over of a junior Traffic Training Centre

In line with 100 days of activism, the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison has embarked on Road Safety Week, in which different activities will be conducted extensively in all districts from 20 to 24 July 2009. Among those, will be the Road Safety demonstration at the handing over of a Junior Traffic Training Centre at, Miller JSS in Elliotdale, on 23 July 2009.

Owing to the high number of accidents which involve pedestrians, motorist and passengers in the province, the department is investing in young learners by way of integrating Road Safety Education programme's in school curriculum. School learners should progressively be taught traffic safety behaviour from an early age in order for them to eventually become safe and responsible pedestrians, cyclist, motor cyclist and drivers. The junior traffic training centre can play a vital role in this respect.

The development of 24 Junior Traffic Training Centres in the province is a way of addressing limitations of learners with regard to safe participation. We can substantially reduce serious causalities from road crashes and spare many South African families the grief of suffering the loss or serious injury of a loved one on our roads.

The objective is to give learners an opportunity to acquire knowledge, practice motor skills, in a safe simulated traffic situation and develop positive attitudes and the acquisition of knowledge with regard to safe pedestrian behaviour, knowledge of traffic safety rules, traffic signs and road markings.

The Junior Traffic Training Centre Activity is also supported by Eastern Cape Educational, Environmental and Sustainability Forum (ECEES) under which Integrated Curriculum Support Forum features. The aim of the forum is to promote integration with government departments in as far as curriculum programmes are concerned e.g. Department of Water and Environmental Affairs in terms of providing water and promotional material bottles and learner support material.

All media are cordially invited to grace the occasion.
