Green Scorpions to sting environmental criminals

Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Green Scorpion will embark on a week-long environmental enforcement starting on Monday, 22 November 2010.

The intensive programme will start with MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza’s visit to OR Tambo International Airport and the Pretoria Zoo where confiscated animals are held from 09h00 in the morning. Recently the Green Scorpion has been bombarded with challenges of Rhino poaching in the province where more than 12 Rhino were killed and other violations of environmental laws.

The activities of the Gauteng EMIs include vigorous promotion and advancement of the citizens’ constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and wellbeing. The environmental enforcement week will also include working together with veterinary enforcement team to manage entrance points to monitoring the movement of animals and pets. This programme also culminates from the recent outbreak of rabies within Gauteng province.

The enforcement week is a buildup to the intensive enforcement programme during the upcoming festive season.

The campaign will start with awareness in various police stations across the province as part of developing strategies to better handle environmental criminal activities in the province. Journalists are invited to accompany the Green Scorpions during the compliance enforcement activities, scheduled to start on Monday at 08h00 throughout the week.
