Zero tolerance to initiation fatalities - Deputy Minister for Traditional Affairs Mr. Obed Bapela

The Deputy Minister for Traditional Affairs Mr. Obed Bapela would be visiting the Eastern Cape Province in the Oliver Tambo (OR) District as part of the continuing call for "Zero Tolerance of Initiates Fatalities". His visit will take place on the 10 July 2014 at Nyandeni which has been the most affected by the high number of deaths recorded in the province.

The Deputy Minister Bapela would be accompanied by Advocate Stan Khanyile' the Superintendent-General for Department of Traditional Affairs in Eastern Cape, together with senior managers of the department, the Police, the Regional Prosecution Authority in the Eastern Cape as a part of government action to crack down the operation of illegal schools.

"I will not rest and sit whilst children's are dying mainly as a result of illegal schools operating in these areas," said Bapela.

Deputy Minister as part of his intervention would be meeting with all traditional leaders in the OR District municipality from 10h00 in the morning at Mthatha Town Hall.

The Deputy Minister also welcomes the call by the Eastern Cape Premier for a summit to be held in September. He further welcomed the visit by the Eastern Cape Legislature Members of the Portfolio Committee on Health.

The press a conference held by the Premier is a clear indication that the leadership of the province and the Eastern Cape Government and the Legislature would continue working together to ensure the protection of cultural heritage practice.
