World Remembrance Day for the road crash victims and road safety 2012 National festive season launch

Transport Minister, Honourable Dikobe Ben Martins, together with Transport Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe and MECs from other provinces will commemorate the World Remembrance Day by hosting a national Day of Prayer for Road Safety and launch the 2012 National Festive Season Road Safety Campaign.

The principals will be joined by senior national and provincial government officials, inter-faith and inter-denominational leaders, key transport stakeholders and members of the community from across the Republic of South Africa.

The commemoration will emphasise and call upon all road users, public transport operators, short and long distance, private motorists, passengers and pedestrians to take personal responsibility for their safety on the roads.

The United Nations has declared the third Sunday of every year in November as World Remembrance Day for victims of road crashes. This is an international day to remember and pay tribute to the victims of road crashes.

In line with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 campaign, the department will be hosting this year's event on Thursday, 22 November 2012 to pay tribute to road crash victims in South Africa. The department and all the stakeholders present will have a wreath-laying ceremony as way of remembering the victims and also pay tribute to individuals who came to the rescue of road crash victims.

In our society everyone knows someone who has been affected by a road crash or they themselves have been affected. The day will be commemorated through a programme that reflects a strong religious and interfaith character.

Road traffic law enforcement officers and officials will step up road safety operations throughout the festive period in order to reduce the carnage on the roads.

The details of the event are as follows:
Date: Thursday, 22 November 2012
Time: 10:h00
Venue: Lynnville Stadium, Emalahleni, Witbank

Members of the media attending the event are requested to confirm their attendance with Sello Tshipi on 073 498 6722 or Tshipa@dot.gov.za by end of business on Wednesday, 21 November 2012.
