Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane will launch the 2019 Women’s Month programme with a breakfast to recognise thought leaders and development partners driving the socio-economic empowerment of women.
Members of the media are invited to the event as follows:
Date: Wednesday, 31 July 2019
Time: 7h30-9h30
Venue: Sheraton Hotel, Pretoria
To celebrate the month government will host a range of activities under the theme: 25 Years of Democracy: Growing South Africa Together for Women’s Emancipation. The theme ties together the success story of our country, with the gains women have made since 1994. It also reminds us of the social compact that is required to break down the multiple barriers and threats that women, young women, and women with disabilities still face.
Journalists will be able to engage with Minister Nkoana-Mashabane, and Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize, as well as guests representing UN Women; the Presidential Review Committee on Women’s Emancipation and Gender Equality; members serving on the Interim Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Steering Committee; the Commission for Gender Equality; the SA Human Rights Commission; StatsSA Disability Advisory Group; and numerous youth organisations (SASCO, South African Youth Movement, etc.).
Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane will unpack the weekly themes for Women’s Month and will launch the call to action under the hashtag #WHATWOMENWANT which aims to get women talking about the real issues they face through traditional and social media platforms.
Journalists will have the opportunity to interview women from the numerous organisations mentioned above, as well as representatives from a number of other structures representing the interests of women. Members of the media will also have the opportunity to unpack the mandate of the newly proclaimed Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.
Members of the media must RSVP to Ishmael Selemale (ishmael@gcis.gov.za) by 15h00 on 30 July 2019
