National Disability Rights Machinery Consultative workshop

The media is invited to attend the National Disability Rights Machinery Consultative workshop taking place from Wednesday 5 March to Friday 7 March 2014 in Pretoria. The Deputy Minister, Hon. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will engage stakeholders on progress made since November 2011 when she joined the department in an open session on the 5 March 2014.

The Department of Women Children and People with Disabilities commissioned two research studies through the UNDP as part of the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) Project to strengthen disability-disaggregated analysis of the National Development Plan (NDP), as well as finalise the development of the disability rights M&E strategy and indicator matrix for purposes of the National Disability Rights Policy and more effective monitoring and evaluation of the rights of persons with disabilities.

The M&E tools were also a commitment included in the Baseline Country Report. The draft reports for both studies are ready for validation with relevant stakeholders towards finalisation and utilisation in the NDRP White Paper as well as First Periodic Report.

The Department of Women Children and People with Disabilities is also coordinating the drafting of South Africa’s First Periodic Report to the CRPD, due for depositing to the UN in May 2014. A first draft Report is ready for further consultation and a number of national government departments and institutions have been invited to provide information to enrich the draft report.

The purpose of the consultative meeting is:

  • To consult with the relevant stakeholders on the UNCRPD First Periodic Report.
  • To consult on the Disability Disaggregated National Development Plan Analysis Report
  • To consult on the draft Disability Rights M&E Strategy/Framework/Tools

Date: 5 to 7 March 2014
Time: 8h00 – 16h30
