Western Cape Tourism hosts Lilizela Tourism Awards during Tourism Month, 4 Sept

Tomorrow, the stars of the Western Cape’s tourism sector will be announced at the provincial Lilizela Tourism Awards. An initiative of the National Department of Tourism, the Lilizela Awards seek to honour excellence in the sector.

Provincial winners are entered into the national awards, which takes place on 22 October 2015 at the Sandton Convention Centre. For the first time this year, organisers have introduced the MEC’s award category, which allows Provincial Ministers to select a winner.

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, wished the provincial finalists well before tomorrow’s ceremony.

“The Western Cape has set the standard for service excellence and I wish our entrants the best. Our province’s sector consistently has a strong showing at the national awards. Our tourism sector is full of vibrant, innovative entrepreneurs and this year’s submissions were once again of a high quality.”

Minister Winde said residents had an important role to play in growing the sector.

“Tourism is our fastest growing sector, employing over 204 000 people in formal jobs and generating R17 billion for our local economy. Over the next five years, under a high growth scenario, this sector has the potential to add a further 100 000 formal jobs. To reach these targets we have to stay competitive so we can continue to increase tourist numbers. We know that great service and rich, unique experiences are draw-cards for visitors and I want to encourage our sector to keep re-inventing themselves.”
