Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and Education Department MEC Donald Grant to attend CAPS training session

Premier Helen Zille and MEC Donald Grant will be visiting Spine Road HS in Mitchells Plain. The school is one of 42 training venues across the Western Cape where 9 000 educators will be receiving Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) training for Grades 7 - 9 and Grade 12 next week.

The purpose of the training is to equip teachers with a working knowledge of the CAPS documents for their subject(s) areas before its implementation.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) have, in the last two years, successfully implemented the first two stages of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) in our schools. In 2012, CAPS was first introduced in schools to learners in Grades R to 3 and 10. In 2013, it was then implemented in Grades 4 to 6 and 11.

In 2014, the WCED will implement the third and final stage of CAPS in our schools, which will include Grades 7 to 9 and Grade 12. In order to prepare the educators for next year, educators will be briefed on the CAPS requirements regarding pace, coverage and levels of assessment.

Premier Zille and MEC Grant will be attending the first day of training and will be addressing the educators in the school hall.
