MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle, and Metrorail Regional Manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz, will be officially “switching on” the CCTV camera enforcement system at Buttskop level crossing, the sight of the 2010 mini-bus taxi crash that saw 10 children killed.
The project has been a partnership between the Western Cape Government, Metrorail, and the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services, and was initially implemented at White Road level crossing in Retreat, back in 2012.
There will be visual footage of some of the most serious transgressions captured on CCTV cameras in the past at level-crossings, illustrating the very serious need for interventions to improve safety and ensure that tragedies such as the one that occurred in Buttskop in 2010, never happen again.
MEC Carlisle and Mr Swartz will be interacting with motorists as well as announcing some key enforcement interventions aimed at improving safety at dangerous level crossings in the City and in the province.
All media are invited and welcome to attend. There will be opportunity for interviews and photographs.
