Western Cape Government celebrates role of women in agriculture, 14 and 19 Aug

As part of its Women’s Month campaign, the Western Cape Government is celebrating the vital role women play in the agricultural sector.

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, said on Friday (14 August 2015), the Western Cape Department of Agriculture will host its Agrifemina event in Atlantis.

Women in the agricultural sector working in Pella, Mamre and Atlantis will attend the event.

“We want to honour the women who are making a vital contribution to food security in our province. Speakers will discuss a range of issues, including financial management.”

Minister Winde said next week the Female Entrepreneur Awards winners would also be announced at a ceremony in Stellenbosch.

The competition is a joint effort between the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and the provincial departments of agriculture. It seeks to reward the efforts and contribution of women in job creation, economic growth and poverty alleviation.

“Celebrating the role of women in agriculture is not just about this month, it’s an ongoing process. One of my key priorities is to see more women in agriculture become beneficiaries of land reform programmes,” said Minister Winde.
