Water and Sanitation launches National Integrated Water Information System, 21 Jul

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will launch the National Integrated Water Information System (NIWIS) project in the coming week. The NIWIS project was conceptualised to meet the objectives of serving as a single extensive, integrated, accessible water information system.

The overall objective for its establishment is to provide universal accessibility to required integrated water related information and to assist the decision making process with end user enquiries, as well as analysis and reporting.

NIWIS will be available to DWS Head Office, Regional Offices, the entire water sector as well as the public

The NIWIS is built on the following principles:

  • Business-driven information initiative
  • Single version of the truth
  • Synchronised reporting solutions
  • Standardised information methodologies and tools
  • Empowerment of information consumers for better decision making abilities
  • Collaborated data acquisition and management
  • Holistic address of data issues
