Water and Sanitation holds media tour at the Vaal Dam, 22 Sept

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will on Tuesday, 22nd of September 2020, hold a media tour at the Vaal Dam in light of dwindling levels of the dam, and given its importance in the supply of water to Gauteng and surrounding areas.

The Vaal Dam is a key part of the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS), and supplies water to the Gauteng’s major industries including the petro-energy company SASOL and the electricity generating giant ESKOM.

Gauteng plays a catalytic role in both the regional and continental economy.

Due to the dry-winter season, the levels of the Vaal Dam have depleted considerably, leading to it hovering well below the 40% mark. This means that there is a need for heightened water conservation to use the precious resource wisely and sparingly.

It is also important to see the dam, iconic as it is, in light of this month of September being Heritage Month. All dams in the ownership of the DWS on behalf of government and the people of South Africa are part of the country’s Heritage and must be cherished.

Members of the media are invited as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 22 September 2020
Venue: Vaal Dam, Deneysville, Free State
Time:  Members of the media will meet at the dam at 10h30 for 11h00
