Water and Sanitation continues to engage its stakeholders on the National Pricing Strategy on Raw Water Use, 19 Oct to 3 Nov

DWS continues to engage its stakeholders on the National Pricing Strategy on Raw Water Use

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) continues with consultation of its stakeholders and the members of the public on the revised draft National Pricing Strategy for Raw Water Use Charges.

Following several public consultations in various provinces from September, the Department turned to Gauteng stakeholders who congregated at Riverside Sun in Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal on Monday, 17 October 2022.

The aim of the public consultations is to solicit inputs on the draft National Pricing Strategy for Raw Water Use in South Africa before the closing date of 03 November 2022. Upon receiving all the inputs from the public and water and sanitation stakeholders, the Department will carefully consider them before the finalisation of the strategy.

The Pricing Strategy provides the pricing framework for the use of raw (untreated) water from the water resources and/or supplied from government waterworks and the discharge of water into a water resource or onto land.

The Pricing Strategy seeks to facilitate reform in the sector as well as to provide transparency and predictability to water users on how water will be priced.
It is intended to support the achievement of the goal, as articulated in the National Water Resource Strategy, that water is efficiently and effectively managed for equitable, sustainable growth and development.

In terms of section 56, of the National Water Act, Act 36 of 1998 (NWA), the Minister of Water and Sanitation may, together with the Minister of Finance, every now and then through notices in the Government Gazette, establish a pricing strategy for any water use within the framework of existing relevant government policy.
The revised pricing strategy caters for five water resource charges, namely: Water Resource Management Charges, Water Resources Infrastructure Charges, Waste Mitigation Charge, Water Research Levy and Economic Regulation Charges.
