The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, will open the 16th International Union of Air Pollution Prevention and Environmental Protection Associations (IUAPPA) congress at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Monday, 30 September 2013. The theme for the will be convened under the theme: "Many Nations - One Atmosphere: Plotting the Path to Sustainability".
The IUAPPA is hosted in association with National Association for Clean Air (NACA) from 29 September to 4 October 2013 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Held every three years since the first such Congress – in London in 1966 – the World Congress is attended by some 500-700 participants from more than 40 countries.
Congresses are held in all areas of the world. The last, in 2010, was held in Vancouver, Canada, preceded by Brisbane, Australia in 2007, and London, UK, in 2004. The next World Congress will be held in Seoul, South Korea, in 2016.
The theme of this World Congress is: "Many Nations - One Atmosphere: Plotting the Path to Sustainability". The focus of the congress is to seek holistic sustainable solutions for air quality in the developing world though the integration with Climate Change and Bio-diversity. Specific topics to be covered in the World Congress programme are:
- Air Quality in the Developing World
- Air Pollution and Climate Change
- Bio-diversity, Eco-system Services and Crop Damage
- International Cooperation on Air Pollution
The Congress will run in parallel for the first two days with the annual DEA: Air Quality Governance Lekgotla to be held at the same venue. The Congress is specifically aimed at bringing together policy makers and government representatives, research scientists, project managers, regulators, consultants, corporate environment managers, industry environment officers, and the media, with interests including, for instance, air monitoring and analysis, control systems, consultant expertise and cleaner production initiatives.
