The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will hand-over a Buy Back Centre in Kwa-Mashu and announce the winners of the 2013 Greenest Municipality Competition Awards in Kwa-Mashu and Marianhill Landfill Site respectively, in Kwa-Zulu Natal on the 28 June 2013.
The details of the two events are as follows:
Part 1: Handover of the R7, 5 million Buy Back Centre and Composting Facility in KwaMashu.
The Department of Environmental Affairs is implementing the R7, 5 million Buy Back Centre and Composting Facility project in Kwa-Mashu. The project aims to address waste management issues by providing the Buy Back Centre and composting facilities as well as equipment associated with the operations of the Buy Back centre and also to promote recycling.
The project created 100 jobs for people around Kwa-Mashu. It has also contributed towards SMME development as the contractor appointed for construction on site was an SMME.
Part 2: Greenest Municipality Competition Awards
In the past, Greenest Municipality Competition’s key elements were reducing recycling and reusing waste. Today, The Cleanest Town Competition (CTC), now known as Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC), has incorporated new elements such as Water Management, Energy Efficiency, Tree planting, Landscaping, Beautification, Public participation and Institutional Arrangement.
The GMC has grown to see a need to address environmental protection, social upliftment and economic growth. This is a move from a predominantly environmental focus to sustainable development focus.
The Department awards prizes according to two categories namely; the Metropolitan Municipality and Local Municipality which are awarded first, second and third prizes. The prize money has to be utilised for projects that promote environmental related projects and Green Economy initiatives.
