The United Kingdom's Lord Mayor and Baroness Scotland are to attend the launch of the UK-SA Newton Fund – a multimillion rand fund for science and technology.

The Governments of South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK) invite the media to the announcement of a multi-million rand programme to fund science projects for socio-economic development in South Africa.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, and the UK Minister for Africa, James Duddridge, will launch the UK-SA Newton Fund in Cape Town on 9 September 2014.

The Newton Fund will fund joint projects in areas of research into TB and non-communicable diseases, human capital and infrastructure development, weather forecasting and big data, among other things.

The event will be attended by the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Fiona Woolf, and the Prime Ministerial Trade Envoy to South Africa, Baroness Scotland. Alderman Woolf is the 686th Lord Mayor of London. Baroness Scotland, a British barrister, made history in 1991 by becoming the first black woman to be appointed a Queen's Counsel and was a member of the Commission for Racial Equality.

South Africa and the UK signed a bilateral science and technology agreement in February 1995, focusing on areas such as climate change, biotechnology, astronomy and global change.
