Tshwane workshops to engage communities on geographical names processes

Communities in Tshwane are being granted an opportunity to participate in the geographical names processes, including the modification of names, through workshops that are scheduled to be held in areas around the City.

Two workshops will be held in Soshanguve and Mamelodi this week, targeting 200 people per session, which will involve local municipalities and community based organisations in Tshwane.

The workshops are part of a bid to speed up the processes of standardization of geographical names in Gauteng, and are organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the Gauteng Geographical Names Committee, in partnership with the City of Tshwane and Local Municipalities.

The focus of both workshops will be on the identification and correction of wrongly spelt names, derogatory names and proposed new names, as well as issues of standardization. It will also look into the procedures that are to be followed in the changing of names. The workshops will also pronounce government’s mandate to bring about transformation, public participation, consultation, jurisdiction partnership and cooperation on all three spheres of government.

The workshops are scheduled as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 4 June 2014
Time: 10h00
Venue: Soshanguve Gymnasium, Tshwane

Date: Thursday, 5 June 2014
Time: 10h00
Venue: Mamelodi, Stanza Bopape, Tshwane
