Transport Month campaign closes on road safety note

Transport Minister, Honourable Dikobe Ben Martins will lead a Road Safety Mass Walk through the City of Tshwane up to the lawns of the Union Buildings, in what will be the culmination of the department’s October Transport Month 2012 campaign.

The campaign was officially launched at the beginning of October in Soweto under the theme “Working together to provide a safe and reliable transport system”.

Minister Martins will be joined by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane Councilor Kgosientso Ramokgopa and leaders from various sectors in the Republic together with members of the media.

The event will also serve as a spring board to the approaching festive season.

The details of the event are as follows:

Date: Saturday, 3 November 2012
Venue (assembling point): Corner of Madiba and Lillian Ngoyi streets, in front of the City of Tshwane’s Munitoria building
Time: 09h30

The walk will end at the Union Building where a formal programme will be conducted.

As part of the campaign and in line with the theme, among others, Minister Martins will address and highlight issues in relation to:

  • road safety;
  • efficient and reliable public transport;
  • job creation;
  • infrastructure development and improvement, and
  • skills development.

The October Transport Month campaign is used to raise awareness on the important role of transport in the economy, to solicit participation from civil society and business in providing a safer, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system.

The campaign is used to engage in initiative showcasing progress achieved in various transport programmes and projects. It is used to promote short and long-term transport plans of the Department of Transport, provinces, public entities & metros (including flagship projects).

Through the OTM campaign, the Department highlights the role and successes of all stakeholders in creating safe modes of transport and contributions towards socio-economic development innovations.

It also creates a platform to mobilise public and private sector participation in transport projects aimed at developing the country’s economy and for sustainable job creation.
