Transport Deputy Minister brings road safety under the spotlight in Limpopo Province

The Deputy Minister of Transport, honourable Sindisiwe Chikunga will interact with motorists, pedestrians, passengers and school children in Thohoyandou, in Venda Limpopo province to spread the message of road safety in line with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign 2011 to 2020.

The Deputy Minister will be joined by Limpopo MEC for Roads and Transport, Mr Pitsi Moloto, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Road Traffic Management Corporation, Mr Collins Letsoalo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Road Accident Fund, Dr Eugene Watson and senior national and provincial government officials during the visit and interaction with the communities.

In South Africa, approximately 40 people are killed on our roads every day, about 1000 every month and about 14 000 every year.

In the concerted effort to reduce the carnage on South Africa’s roads, Deputy Minister Chikunga will interact with the road users to highlight the importance of learner education and awareness regarding road safety, the importance of pedestrian and vehicle visibility at all times, the dangers of over-speeding and the significance of vehicle and driver fitness amongst others.

Deputy Minister Chikunga will also officially open a subway next to Makwarela Primary School in Thohoyandou which has been revamped with the participation of the learners from the school and surrounding areas as well as engage with road users at the Khoroni intersection highlighting the dangers of jay-walking, distracted walking and drunk walking.
