The Portfolio Committee on Transport will from tomorrow undertake an oversight visit to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa in Gauteng. The visit is in line with the oversight role the Committee performs over the Department of Transport and it entities.
PRASA is currently renewing its rolling stock fleet with the aim of delivering quality services to citizens as well as revitalising the country’s rail engineering industry through local manufacturing, employment creation, skills development and Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment. The visit is intended to assess the design and manufacturing of rolling stock and for the Committee to familiarise itself with PRASA property development plans.
The Committee will also have an opportunity to interact directly with train commuters by taking an early morning train ride from Pretoria to Johannesburg. This will enable the Committee to gain first-hand knowledge of daily challenges faced by commuters.
