South Africa celebrates 2017 World Maritime Day

South Africa will celebrate the 2017 World Maritime Day (WMD) on Thursday, 28 September 2017 in Port St Johns, Eastern Cape.

The National Department of Transport will host a career exhibition for the learners in Port St Johns and surrounding areas during the pre-WMD event on Wednesday, 27 September 2017. The expo will give about 400 learners an insight into the maritime sector and expose them to study, bursary as well as career opportunities available in the sector.

It will be followed by the official commemorative event on Thursday, 28 September 2017 which will be officiated by the Minister of Transport, Mr Joe Maswanganyi and Deputy Minister, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga.

They will be joined by the Eastern Cape provincial government, South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) as well as other key maritime industry stakeholders.

World Maritime Day is an annual event celebrated by countries which are signatories to the United Nations’ (UN) maritime agency known as the World Maritime Organisation (IMO). South Africa is also a member state of the IMO.

The World Maritime Day event is used to celebrate and raise awareness about maritime issues. In South Africa, the focus will be on sensitizing children and youth in previously disadvantaged communities including rural areas about careers and bursary opportunities available in the maritime sector.
