Transport celebrates World Maritime Day, 23 Sept

“Maritime Education and Training”

Every year, during the last week of September, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) celebrates World Maritime Day.

This year on the 23rd of September Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters and Deputy Minister of Transport Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga will celebrate the World Maritime Day in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal under the theme: "Maritime Education and Training.”

Minister Peters, who will give a keynote address during the celebrations, will be joined by MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu, maritime industry CEOs and captains and senior national and provincial government officials.

The World Maritime Day 2015 will be celebrated at the IMO Headquarters in London, on Thursday, 24 September 2015, with parallel events being hosted by various countries across the globe.

This year, the spotlight will fall on effective standards of training as a bedrock for a safe and secure shipping industry. These standards need to preserve the quality, practical skills and competence of qualified human resources in order to ensure its sustainable work, both at sea and on-shore.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the celebrations will be attended by school children from previously disadvantaged communities who will all display their knowledge of the maritime sector through educational displays and exhibitions. The day will also be used as a platform to create more awareness about careers in the maritime industry.

Key maritime stakeholders such as the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), and KwaZulu-Natal province will hold exhibitions and maritime experts will engage with and educate the learners about the details and activities of the industry including vocational experience.
