Trade and Industry hosts 2015 Company Law Seminar in Gauteng, 13 to 14 Aug

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will host the 2015 Company Law Seminar at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 13 to 14 August 2015. The purpose of the seminar is to deliberate on the impact of the Companies Act, provide feedback on its implementation, and interrogate the business rescue tools implemented by government.

According to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, the seminar will also focus on how the Companies Act impacts on small businesses, mergers and acquisitions, as well as other cooperative governance issues. This seminar will be attended by delegates from business, law practitioners, government officials and also other entities and organisations affected by the companies’ legislation.

“Feedback gathered from previous seminars has indicated that people are still battling with the implementation of certain aspects of the Act and that there is a need to engage with the public on the topical issues and related sections to flesh them out and give a proper context,” says Davies

He adds that the dti established entities such as the Companies Tribunal to adjudicate on company matters, Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) to implement, enforce and register businesses and the Specialist Company Law Committee (SCCL) to advise on legislation, as part of the implementation process of the Companies Act of 2008.

Speakers at the seminar will include Right Honourable Lady Justice Arden from the United Kingdom, Justice Owen Rogers from the Western Cape High Court, Judge President of the Gauteng High Court, Justice Dustan Mlambo and various South African academics and practitioners.
