Telecommunications and Postal Services and Communications host SADC Ministers Meeting, 5 to 7 Sept

Statement to announce the media arrangements of the SADC ICT Ministerial Meeting

The Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS) and the Department of Communications will be hosting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ministers Meeting, for Ministers responsible for Communications and ICT.

The overarching objective of the SADC Ministers for Communications and ICT Programme is to establish communications systems that are accessible, affordable, efficient, reliable, of a high quality and fully integrated to meet the diverse requirements and to ensure connectivity to the citizens of the SADC Region.

Connectivity will contribute to the attainment of the goals for regional economic integration, poverty alleviation and industrialisation. The Ministers program also aims to transform the SADC region into an information and knowledge-based economy.

The Ministers meeting follows from 37th SADC Summit of Head of State and Government held in Pretoria in August 2017 where South Africa assumed the Chair of SADC region. This is in line with the Foreign Policy objectives of South Africa of playing a major role in the agenda of SADC Communications and ICT sector.

SADC ICT Ministerial Meeting in South Africa will focus on promoting access to affordable ICT infrastructure services, positioning South Africa as regional infrastructure hub and promoting SMMEs under the overall SADC industrialisation and regional integration agenda.

The SADC Ministerial Meeting will be hosted under the Theme “Preparing SADC for the Fourth Industrial Revolution through ICTs”.

Members of the media are invited to note the following media arrangements.

1. Process of media accreditation

Online media registration is closing on Friday, 1 September 2017 at 17h00. Media is requested to register online by using the following link:

 https://www.dtps.gov.za/sadcICT2017/

After the closing of applications, onsite media accreditation, the SADC meeting and all related events will take place at the Zimbali Fairmont Hotel. 

Applicants are advised of the following requirements for onsite accreditation:

  1. South African Identity Document or Passport (Photocopies will not be accepted)
  2. Card or Letter from the editor
  3. For foreign media: Passport and Media Card (Foreign Driver License will not be accepted

NB: All media are expected to undergo live accreditation.

Once accreditation is complete, media delegates can access Venue and all attend open sessions as per programme.

Monday, 4 September:             13:00 – 18:30
Tuesday, 5 September             8:30 – 18:00
Wednesday, 6 September         8:30 – 18:00
Thursday, 7 September            8:30 – 18:00
