The Department of Health has experienced various challenges throughout the years to provide excellent care to the Citizens of Gauteng. However, the previous Term of Legislature recorded some significant performance improvements in the Gauteng Health System.

In his State of the Nation Address on the 17th of June 2014, the President committed to prioritising the fight against drugs and substance abuse in schools and communities. He also emphasised government’s plans to prioritise child health and efforts to increase life expectancy at birth from 60 years in 2012 to 63 years in 2019.

Further, the President also committed to reducing the child and maternal mortality rate by implementing the National Development Plan (NDP) to improve quality of care in the public sector.

The President further emphasized that government would build on the successes of the HIV/Aids treatment and support programme by rolling out mass HIV prevention communication campaigns.

Gauteng Premier, Hon. David Makhura, echoed the President’s sentiments during his State of the Province Address on the 27th of June 2014, emphasising the Province’s commitment to the vision of providing better quality health care to all.

The GPL’s Portfolio Committee on Health will engage more than 300 Sedibeng stakeholders, including Speakers and Mayors from Municipalities in the Region.  Members of the Community will be encouraged to make their submissions for consideration by Chairperson, Hon. Nhlapo, and implementation by the MEC, and subsequently a reply to a House Sitting that will take place at the end of July 2014.

Members of the Media are invited to this session. No accreditation required.
