Sport and Recreation hosts memorial service for late Dr Steve 'Kalamazoo' Mokone, 11 Apr

The Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa in partnership with Gauteng Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation Department, SASCOC, SAFA,City of Joburg and the City of Tshwane will be hosting a Memorial Service for the late South Africa’s Great Football player and legend Dr Steve “Kalamazoo” Mokone”.

Dr Mokone was a first black South African to play in Europe's professional leagues and was a first black sportsmen to have a street named after him in a foreign country, Holland. He played in Britain when he was signed for the English club Coventry City in 1955 and later played in Holland. Before that Dr Mokone made his mark playing for the defunct Durban Bush Bucks.

In 2003 the then President, Thabo Mbeki conferred Ntate Mokone with the newly-conceived Order of Ikhamanga - South Africa's highest honour for achievement in the creative and performing arts and sport. This was in addition to numerous international accolades and academic achievements. In 2012, the Ministry of Sport and Recreation in South Africa bestowed on him the Steve Tshwete Life Time Achiever Award.
