In continued efforts to transform, revitalised and keep the Reserve Force as part of the “one force” concept of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the SANDF has organised a three day strategic Reserve Force Symposium from 11 to 13 September 2014, at University of South Africa (UNISA) Graduate School of Business Leadership in Midrand, Johannesburg.
It is envisaged that this year’s instalment, which is taking place against the backdrop of the Defence Review 2014, will discuss at length the issue of employers’ support which is integral for the Reserve Force Service and thus draft a viable master plan detailing the intent to achieve and maintain this objective. The Defence Review provides a new policy framework for the development of the Defence Force, including the reserves over the next 20 years.
The role of the Reserve Force, to mention but a few, is to augment the regulars force in operations, provide certain specialist, scarce skills and main specialist capabilities for reconstruction and development.
It is expected that the symposium will be attended by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, members of the Plenary Defence Staff Council, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence, Service Chiefs, Senior Reserve Staff, the Reserve Force Council, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, the Chief Executive Officers of South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and Transnet and academics from UNISA as well as the Vice Chancellor of UNISA. The programme will also include presentations by representatives from UK, USA and Norway.
