The governments of South Africa (SA) and the United Kingdom (UK) invite the media to the announcement of a R500 million programme to fund science projects for socio-economic development in South Africa. The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, and the UK Minister for Africa, James Duddridge, will launch the UK-SA Newton Fund in Cape Town on 9 September 2014.
The UK-SA Newton Fund will fund joint projects in the areas of research into TB and non-communicable diseases, human capital and infrastructure development, weather forecasting and big data, among other things. South Africa and the UK signed a bilateral science and technology agreement in February 1995, focusing on areas such as climate change, biotechnology, astronomy and global change.
