South Africa’s Youth and the Labour Market

On Thursday 5 June, 2014, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) will release a report on The National and Provincial Labour Market, Youth, Q1: 2008-Q1: 2014" which examines various aspects of the situation faced by youth aged 15 to 34 years in the South African labour market, based on the first quarter results of the QLFS each year over the period 2008 to 2014.

As the country celebrates youth month during the 20 Years of Democracy, the report traces labour market outcomes of youth across the country based on the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) labour market data using revised population benchmarks from the 2011 Population Census.

The Statistician-General Mr Pali Lehohla, will give an outline on the report which is the third in a series of quarterly reports aimed at providing an analysis of various aspects of the South African labour market at provincial level, based on current labour market information.

The results of the QLFS for the first quarter of 2014 as well as the GDP indicate a decline in the economic activity of the country. Currently, a high percentage of people in the labour force comprise the youth.
