Social Development meets traditional authorities over rural development, 4 to 5 Mar

Social Development to meet with traditional authorities over rural development

The Department of Social Development will hold a two-day conference with traditional authorities in an attempt to establish a structured, mutually beneficial relationship with traditional authorities in South Africa that will advance development in rural areas.

Areas under traditional leadership continue to experience social and economic disadvantage characterised by lack of income, extremely high levels of unemployment, inadequate social and economic infrastructure, low health and educational outcomes, low exposure to and use of developmental information and knowledge, and many other challenges at the personal, family and community levels.

The objective of the partnership, therefore, is to ensure the scaling up and intensification of human and social development interventions and their impact, in the rural areas of South Africa. Central in this partnership is the joint commitment to bring about human, social and economic development in the areas that are under traditional leadership and authority.

The envisaged partnership is between the Social Development Sector (the National Department of Social Development, provincial departments of Social Development, the South African Social Security Agency and the National Development Agency) and the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa).

Members of the media are invited to cover the conference, which will take place as follows:
