Learners of Tshilidzini special school in Thohoyandou to benefit from three accessible computer laboratories
Pupils with disabilities from Tshilidzini Special School, a primary boarding school in Thohoyandou will from this year's Social Development month have access to better learning facilities as they will receive three accessible computer laboratories. The accessible laboratories will be handed over by the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu.
Tshilidzini Special School was founded in 1971 and is the only boarding school in Limpopo that caters for pupils who are physically impaired, visually impaired and hard of hearing. It houses 365 learners and the medium of instruction is Tshivenda and South African sign language. Learners are taught Braille and sign language across all Grades.
The Department of Social Development and MTN SA Foundation established a partnership to establish accessible Computer Laboratories with specialised equipment to address special needs for learners with disabilities. Tshilidzini Special School has been identified as one of the schools in the country without accessible computer lab.
Most learners with disabilities are only exposed to special computer facilities at tertiary institutions and this impacts negatively on their performance.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover Handover of the accessible laboratories arranged as follows:
Date: Friday, 13 October 2017
Time: 11h00
Venue: Number 10, Denzheni Street, Shayandima Village in Thohoyandou, Vhembe District Municipality
The Deputy Minister will prior to the main handover, meet with parents, especially mothers, of the learners at the school at 08h00 for an empowerment session on raising a child with a disability.
