Social Development donates R100K for Gombani Womens Brick Cooperative, 12 Dec

The Department of Social Development, in partnership with MTN-SA Foundation, will be in Gombani Village, Limpopo this Friday, 12 December to donate R100 000 to the Gombani Women’s Brick Cooperative aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the Cooperative.

This cooperative was established with the help of Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu during her time as Deputy Minister of Public Works, in partnership with the Province of Limpopo, Mutale Local Municipality, Vhembe District Municipality, IDT, Agreement SA, South Africa Women in Construction and Mmabatho Foundation for Women Development, as part of the Women’s Month 2011 activities.

The cooperative makes bricks and builds houses in the village of Gombani in Mutale, Vhembe District Municipality.  The donation is expected to help the cooperative achieve sustainability, create more jobs and contribute towards reducing poverty in the village.

Statistics from the Department of Trade and Industry (the DTI) show that cooperatives have capacity to create jobs when implemented correctly.  For example, Kenyan co-operatives account for 45% of the GDP and 31% of that country’s gross national savings.

The official handover of the “cheque” is scheduled to take place as follows:
Date: Friday, 12 December 2014
Time: 10h00
Venue: Gombani Village, Mutale in Vhembe District Municipality
