Sipho Mutsi games 2013 'Celebrating the Spirit of Sipho Mutsi through Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation'

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in collaboration with Department of Education, Matjhabeng Local Municipality and Lovelife will be hosting the Provincial Sipho Mutsi Games for the fourth year in Odendaalsrus. The games are scheduled to take place from the 27 to 29 September 2013.

The games are in their fourth year having been conceptualised in 2010 by MEC Dan Kgothule. Mr Kgothule whom deemed it fit that an 18 year old activist and leader of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS), Sipho Mutsi who died in police custody during interrogation at the Odendaalsrus prison, should be honoured by the Free State through sport. The inaugural games were played in Odendaalsrus in 2010 and have since then grown into a big festival of sport involving Primary and Secondary Schools played from all over the Free State province.

All four Districts and Mangaung Metro Municipality will converge in Odendaalsrus to compete in 3 different sporting codes for U/13 and U/17 age groups.

Each District descended a massive team contingent of 160 (hundred and sixty) athletes totalling 800 (eight hundred) athletes to participate in sporting codes as per below table.

The opening ceremony will be held at Sipho Mutsi’s former school, Marobe Secondary School on the 27 September 2013 at 15h00. The opening ceremony will be preceded by DJ Phinzo of Lesedi FM, Tear Gas Music Group from 13h00 to 17h00. The Formal Programme will be directed by Chris Mampane, one of the best standup comedians in the country. DJ USB and DJ Daddy of Odendaalsrus will keep spectators entertained during the games and Awards Closing Ceremony that will be held on 29 September 2013 at 12h00 at Marobe Secondary School.

Provincial and National coaches as well as talent scouters are invited to come and identify talented players and possible future stars that can represent the province at Professional Sport clubs at national competitions.

As we prepare for the 2014 elections, as marked by the formation of the oldest liberation movement on the continent of Africa, the African National Congress, the honouring of the struggle heroes icon such as Mr Sipho Mutsi through the Sipho Mutsi Games, could not be happening at a better time.
