Shakes national memorial service to serve as fitting tribute to a legend

As preparations continue ahead of the national memorial service to honour the late Isaac Shakes Kungwane, the Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Molebatsi Bopape, has appealed to the sports fraternity and the community of Alexandra to seize the opportunity to bid a final farewell to the fallen football legend.

The memorial service is set to be held at the Three Square Stadium in Alexandra and it’s expected to be attended by Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula, Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Molebatsi Bopape, City of Johannesburg MMC Councillor Chris Vondo, members of the football fraternity and the Alexandra community, among other expected guests.

Entities expected to give tributes include Alexandra football and social structures, the National Football Supporters Association and the South African Football Players Union, as well as all three spheres of government.

MEC Molebatsi Bopape has encouraged the public to attend the service, she said: “for a man who has given so much to the sport of football, a sport he loved passionately, the memorial service should be an opportunity to pay a fitting tribute and honour Shakes Kungwane’s memory, I would like to encourage all the people whose lives he touched to converge at the stadium to bid Shakes a final farewell.”

Gospel musician Sfiso Ncwane is slated to perform a musical interlude at the event.

The memorial service is scheduled as follows:
