SCOPA to meet Social Development, Bapong ba Mogale and Botshelo Water

On Tuesday, 11 June 2013, the North West Provincial Legislature’s Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts (SCOPA) will hold a follow-up meeting with the Social Development MEC Mokomele-Mothibi at the Legislature, Committee Room 2 at 13h30.

MEC Mokomele-Mothibi admitted to misusing tax payers’ money amounting to R174 000 to pay for her friend and officials to go to Bloemfontein to attend the African National Congress Elective Conference in December last year. She committed herself to pay all the money back to the state coffers in full within seven working days effective from the day of the meeting where she admitted before the Committee to have misused the funds. Tomorrow she will be bringing proof of payment for the money.

On Wednesday, 12 June 2013, SCOPA will meet with Botshelo Water and municipalities under the Ngaka Modiri Molema and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District municipalities and relevant government departments over unpaid debt of R173m at the same venue at 09h30.

This came after Botshelo Water presented a report to the Committee over the escalating bulk water supply debts from the municipalities.

On Thursday, 13 June 2013, SCOPA will hold a public meeting with Bapo Ba Mogale communities on the D-Account at the Bapong Tribal Hall at 09h00.

The Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Department of Finance and the Office of the Auditor General will brief the Committee and members of the community on the processes of the D-Account and the accountability thereto.

The D Account is an account where all mining companies deposit royalties for traditional authorities. According the Auditor General’s office, the D account has never been audited for the past 19 years.
