The North West Provincial Legislature’s Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts (SCOPA) will be calling the MEC for Social Development, Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi to account to the committee after media reports alleged that the MEC had interfered with tenders in the department and also used taxpayers’ money to pay for her friend and officials to go to Bloemfontein during the time of the African National Congress elective conference in Mangaung.
The meeting will be held at the Legislature Committee Room 2 on Thursday 14 February 2013 at 09h00.
Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Hlomane Chauke said the Committee has noted with concern media reports about the said department.
“We have read two articles in the newspapers about MEC Mokomele-Mothibi interfering with tenders in the department and the other one stated that she misused public funds by paying R174 000 for her friend and other department officials for a trip to Bloemfontein on the 15 to 21 December 2012.
“We are concerned about this and therefore as SCOPA, we are calling the MEC to find out what is happening with this issue.
“Where public funds are concerned, as SCOPA, we will not leave any stone unturned in making sure that public funds are not misused. All those implicated will have to account for it,” said Hon. Hlomane Chauke.
Members of the media are invited to attend the meeting.
