The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor will deliver the keynote address at the awards ceremony of the National Science Olympiad (NSO) at Emperor’s Palace Hotel, Kempton Park, today, 10 July 2014 at 18h00.
About 250 people are expected to attend the Awards Ceremony, of which half are learners from South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The National Science Olympiad is a nationwide event for learners in Grades 10 to 12, with schools from neighbouring countries also invited to participate.
A total of 29 115 learners participated in the 2014 Olympiad. The Olympiad is a project of the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF).
The top 120 participants of the National Science Olympiads are invited to attend the Science Focus Week which is held in Gauteng during the June-July school vacation, where they are exposed to stimulating lectures, industry visits and role models.
The main winners will either win a paid trip to the London International Youth Science Forum or attend the National Youth Science Forum in Australia.
