School sport action on the cards at the Gauteng School Games

Some exciting School Sport action is assured this coming Friday and Saturday at the Gauteng School Games, an event that is definitely set to showcase some of the province’s most promising talent in football, volleyball, netball and rugby.

About 2 000 primary and secondary school learners between the ages 11 – 17, representing schools from around the province, will compete in the 2 day event which is organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education.

The games, scheduled to be held at the University of Pretoria Sports Complex on both days, are a culmination of the school leagues that have been running within provincial clusters and districts from the start of the season.

Gauteng Sport MEC Molebatsi Bopape has heralded her intentions to support talent development through intensive school sport programmes. School sport has long been identified as a crucial platform for talent identification and the development of future champions, and these leagues, according to Bopape, provide an opportunity for schools and young players to refine and showcase their skills.

Winning teams in each of the 4 codes will not only be crowned Gauteng Champions, but will also proceed to the National School Championships to be held in December 2014, where Gauteng will be defending its champions status. The province has won the national title at the inter-provincial games in Tshwane in 2012 and Bloemfontein during 2013.

Similar provincial games will be held later in the year where Gauteng schools will be competing in Chess, Basketball, Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Tennis, Swimming, Hockey and Cricket, in preparation of the national games.
