SA Schools Sport National Championships

The Minister of Sport and Recreation SA,  Mr. Fikile Mbalula, MP  will be rolling out the SA School Sport National Championships from the 10-15 December 2012 at various venues in Tshwane. The SA School Sport National Championship is the culmination of the Minister’ Sports Plan, Section 2, Objective 2 which seeks to ensure maximum access to sport, recreation and physical education in every school in South Africa .

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Sport & Recreation and that of Basic Education on 13 December 2011 wherein both departments had an agreement on specific roles to play regarding the program. School Sport delivery is a joint function of both departments thus the School Sport program launched on the 5 November 2011 at Vista, Soweto and the signing of the MOU thereafter.

The Memorandum of Understanding commits both departments to deliver a sustainable integrated plan to provide school children with opportunities to take part in Physical education and organized sport through the creation of an accessible and implementable school sport support system.

To spearhead the program further, the SA Schools Shootout took place for 6 days during a 3 week period in March 2012 in JHB then the National Schools Sport League Programme was then launched on the 28th March 2012 at Mamelodi.

The SA School Sport National Championships’ is the ultimate sport competition for the various schools in the provinces which competes in 9 sporting codes which are:

Athletics: Tuks Stadium: 14-15 Dec 2012
Basketbal: St Mary’s High School & UP Mamelodi campus: 11-15 Dec 2012
Wheelchair Basketball:     Pretoria West Indoor Hall: 11-15 Dec 2012
Chess: Pretoria Show Grounds: 11-15 Dec 2012
Cricket : St. Alban’s College: 11-15 Dec 2012
Volleyball: Heartfelt Centre, Valhalla (11-15 Dec 2012)
Gymnastics: Joni Bach Sport Centre: 11-13 Dec 2012
Football: UP TUKSSPORT (11-15 Dec)
Netball : UP TUKSSPORT (11-14 Dec)
Rugby: UP TUKSSPORT (11, 12 & 14 Dec)
