SA school sport national championships go to Mangaung - Bloemfontein

Last year, 2012 marked the historic launch of the SA School Sport Championship in Tshwane as more than four thousand learners from all nine provinces competed for the title of national champion in the nine sporting codes This multi-coded championship comprised of a total of nine sporting codes and was broadly lauded as ‘the biggest showcase of our latent talent and the birth of Future Stars!’

The SA School Sport National Championship is the national culmination of the school sport activity and competition that started from class room level, to school level, inter-school level, district level, provincial level all the way up to national level.

The more than seven thousand athletes that will be participating in the fourteen sporting codes of the 2013 Championships are therefore provincial champions in their name and right and part-taking in the national championships in defence of provincial pride and strive for national title. This is also a big improvement from the 2012 performance as there has been a great escalation in both the number of athletes (from five thousand to seven thousand athletes / learners) and the sporting codes (from nine to fourteen)

Since there are fourteen sporting codes, for able and disabled athletes, the sport loving South Africans and patrons would be spoilt for choice as there will be nineteen different venues hosting different games every day between the period 10-14 December 2013. The full fixture for the games will be available on the SRSA Website and there is no entrance fee to watch the games. On behalf of the LOC, Sport & Recreation SA invites everybody, particularly the parents and community members to support these games and attend them in great numbers.

The highlight of the games is definitely going to be the opening ceremony which will take place on 10 December 2013, 18h00 at Culie Human Hall, UFS as well as the closing Ceremony which will take place on 14 December 2013, 18:00 at Chevrolet Park, Cricket Stadium. Both these events will be held in true Olympic style, preceded by a grand parade of all provincial teams and addressed by the Minister of Sport & Recreation SA, Mr Fikile Mbalula. The Opening Ceremony will also be dedicated to the loving memory of Former President, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

The sheer size of this competition is ground breaking! The 2012 Olympics for instance hosted ten thousand nine hundred and three participants for all the Olympic codes and the 2013 SA Schools Championships will host more than seven thousand participants for only 14 codes. This is very much in line with governments commitment to provide access to sport and recreation opportunities.
