The restoration and revitalisation of the two Eastern Cape’s historic schools, Healdtown Comprehensive and St Mathews High schools is gaining a momentum as the provincial education department and the Historic Schools Restoration Project will tomorrow sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the East London Education Institute at 12h00.
The MoU outlines the process to be followed in transforming these former schools of excellence while at the same time ensuring their sustainability as Africa’s institutions of educational and cultural excellence.
Additionally, the partnership will also see the development of sound institutional leadership and management of these centres. The first phase of the project is the development and resuscitation of an infrastructure suitable for teaching and learning with hostels.
The infrastructure will include the provision of necessary water supply, new sewer reticulation with its treatment plant, access and internal campus roads, storm water and vehicle parking lots for staff and visitors.
Accompanying these will be the electrification of these centres and the installation of modern communications and connectivity like the internet for the learners. The centre is intended to foster excellence in teaching and learning in the surrounding communities.
