The National Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold its annual Winter School camp for 100 learners doing grade 10 to 12, who are interested in pursuing careers in the built industry.
This year will have those learners who are now in grade 12, who started the winter school camp during its inception when they were in grade 10.
The winter school camp is part of continued efforts to support the implementation of skills development in the country. The 100 learners were selected from the Department of Public Works Schools programme. They come from 16 schools adopted by DPW from disadvantaged schools in rural, township and farm communities across the country.
The Winter School camp will run from the 12th to the 18th July 2015 in Pretoria. It is aimed at creating awareness and to influence learners to take careers in the built environment. The camp also aims to de-stigmatise the built industry whose professionals are often perceived as mud mixing and back breaking with unattractive salaries.
Learners participating in the DPW Winter school programme, are provided an opportunity to be bursary beneficiaries from the department in partnership with the Construction Education Training Authority (CETA).
During the winter school camp, Maths and Science tutorials are offered for the duration of the camp in a bid to address learning gaps and to focus on remedial work.
Built environment Young Professionals from the Department of Public Works will have exciting and practical presentations aimed at attracting the learners into the Built environment.
On Tuesday 14July 2015, Public Works Minister TW Nxesi, MP, will be at the camp to address and motivate the learners.
