Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela to kick start National Good Governance Week

Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela and fellow Integrity Sector Bodies will launch the Good Governance Week with a two day conference to be held at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria. The conference will be held under the theme: “Good Governance and Poverty Eradication: Two sides of the same coin.”

The National Good Governance Week aims to raise awareness regarding the need for a collective consciousness of good governance; understanding of importance of good governance in ensuring responsive service delivery; and understanding the importance of ethical leadership in ensuring good governance and integrity in state affairs among other things.

Invited Speakers include Minister Jeff Radebe, Justice and Constitutional Development, Minister Trevor Manuel, National Planning Commission, Minister Colins Chabane, Monitoring and Evaluation, Judge Edwin Molahlehi, Deputy Chairperson of Legal Aid SA and Arch Bishop Njongonkulu Ndungane, Dr Barney Pityana, Rector, College of Transfiguration, Professor Heinz Klug, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Research; Director, Global Legal Studies Center University of Wisconsin Madison (USA) and dignitaries who will participate at the Conference include the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Minister Letshesa Tshenoli, Premier of the Western Cape, Hon H. Zille, Chairperson of the Committee on Ethics and Member’s Interests, Mr B. Turok and Vice Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, Mr T. Tselane among others.

An Inter-Faith Good Governance Prayer will also form part of the Week’s activities. The Religious/Spirituality Sector is one of the stakeholders of the Public Protector which will be engaged on issues of good governance. Given the role they play in building communities, moulding societies and nurturing the human spirit, religion and spirituality play a fundamental role in people’s moral and ethical conduct.

With the current level of corruption and maladministration, there is a need for moral regeneration. This event will explore the role various religious and spiritual leaders can play in taking the fight forward.
