Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela to host round-table discussion with United Kingdom (UK) Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman

Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela will next week have a round table discussion with the United Kingdom Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman Dame Julie Mellor (DBE) in Pretoria. The discussion will be held under the theme “Transformation of the UK National Health System through Ombudsmanship” and how South Africa could learn from their British counterparts.

The UK Ombudsman will be in the country as part of the Memorandum of Understanding her office signed with the Public Protector to exchange ideas and expertise in areas of Ombudsmanship.

The discussion will be attended by among others MEC of Health in Gauteng Mr Anthony Papo, Deputy Public Protector Advocate Kevin Malunga, Military Ombudsman Lieutenant-General Themba Mthanzima and Chairperson of the South African Medical Association Dr Mzukisi Grootboom.

The Public Protector is currently conducting three systemic investigations on health related issues in the country. They include an investigation on neonatal infant and child deaths in some hospitals, irregularities and inefficiency in the procurement of hospital medicines and equipment leading to interruption in Gauteng hospitals and general health related complaints raised to the Public Protector during the 2012 Stakeholder Consultative Dialogues.

The Public Protector and Ombudsman Julie Mellor will also attend a community outreach event in Vosloruus.
