Public Protector to address a crime reduction and criminal justice conference in Johannesburg

Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela will on Thursday, 14 August 2014 deliver a keynote address at the 5th Annual International Conference: National and International Perspectives on Crime Reduction and Criminal Justice in Johannesburg.

The Public Protector’s address will focus on the role of her office in relation to enhancing accountability, combating corruption in the face of challenges to the rule of law.

The event will be attended by professional researchers and analysts from civil society, academia, government and the private sector who are interested in reducing or preventing various crime types (including corruption), and improving the functioning of the criminal justice system in line with Human Rights standards.

Participants at the conference come from several countries in Africa including Botswana, Nigeria, Malawi and Kenya; as well as from the United States, United Kingdom, India and Argentina.

Later in the afternoon the Public Protector will kick-start her office’s annual stakeholder consultative dialogue in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. She will have a meeting with Gauteng Premier Hon. David Makhura, Speaker of the Provincial Legislature, Members of Provincial Legislatures, Provincial Accounting Officers, Legal Advisors, City of Johannesburg entities and others.

They (Public Protector and Gauteng Premier) will later in the day hold an outreach event with community of Soweto in Orlando.

The aim of this year’s dialogue is for the Public Protector to dialogue with government, state entities and general public on how maladministration and corruption could be eliminated and service delivery accelerated.
