President Zuma to launch R12 billion Water Project in Eastern Cape

President Jacob Zuma will on Friday, 11 April 2014, officially launch the Umzimvubu Water Project located in Umzimvubu, Alfred Nzo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape as part of government's Infrastructure Development Programme and its quest to address clean water provision challenges in the province.

The R12.45 billion project is anticipated to accelerate and stimulate social and economic upliftment of the communities in the region and has been identified as one of the priorities of government regarding the provision of clean water in the province.

Due to the significance of the project to the socio-economic development of the Eastern Cape, government has classified the Umzimvubu Water Project as a Strategic Integrated Project so that it can be allocated necessary resources and be implemented speedily.

The project entails the construction of two multipurpose dams, Ntabelanga and Laleni Dams, on the Tsitsa River, which is a tributary of the Mzimvubu River, to supply irrigated agriculture, domestic and industrial water requirements, and hydropower generation.

The project will supply clean water to communities around district municipalities of OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi District and other parts of the province.
