President Jacob Zuma to open two new schools in the Eastern Cape

President Jacob Zuma will this week open two schools near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. To mark the opening of the 2014 school year, the President will open Ngidini Primary School in Libode and the Nelson Mandela School of Science and Technology in Mvezo on Thursday, 16 January 2014 and Friday, 17 January 2014 respectively.

Ngidini Primary was built as part of the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Development Initiative (ASIDI), an extension of the broader Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC) led by the President.

The initiative aims to eradicate all mud schools and inappropriate structures, as well refurbish dilapidated and ill equipped schools. The programme entails the eradication and replacement of 496 mud schools, provision of water and sanitation to 1 257 schools and electricity to 878 schools. Ngidini Primary had been a mud school.

The Nelson Mandela School of Science and Technology has been built by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) company, Siemens. The school will help create the right spirit and enthusiasm around future technologies and will focus on engineering, science, technology and agriculture.
